Conferences

Attending conferences can provide you with a ton of positive experiences:

1.     You get a rapid-fire update about important topics in the field of forensic mental health services.

2.     Conferences provide you with the opportunity to connect with a variety of professionals in your field/country/area of expertise, or with professionals in different areas of work - and build (lasting) partnerships.

3.     Often you get the opportunity to ask direct questions to authorities in your field. 

4.     Finally, they are a lot of fun!

We will start off by introducing our own annual conference, then we will provide you with a brief overview of annual conferences in our field around the world.


Post-conference workshops will take place on June 23, 2023

Our annual conference is a great event for students from all disciplines working in the field of forensic mental health.

  • Our conference provides many special interest groups within IAFMHS a chance to meet or reconnect, talk about their impact on the state of the field, and plan and suggest different projects. The special interest groups (also called ‘SIGs’) offer students with an opportunity to get involved on a deeper level when visiting the conference. Check them out here .
  • The student board hosts a number of collaborative activities at the Conference each year: free student breakfast, 5K fun run, free student social, free student professional panel. These activities are fun and educational, but also bolster a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for our student attendees.

Interested in volunteering at the IAFMHS conference?

As a full-time student and current IAFMHS member, you can sign up through an online registration form which will open up a few months prior to the conference. By the end of April or beginning of May, you will be notified whether you have secured a spot as a volunteer or not. We will send a poll of volunteer shifts to request your preferred shifts and a final schedule closer to the conference. Volunteers will be registered for the conference manually, so please do not register for the conference online if you are chosen as a volunteer!

Getting Into The Conference Game?

Below, we have listed a few resources to help you navigate conferences to help you prepare for an enjoyable conference experience. 

Approaching (potential) supervisors or people you admire at conference can seem daunting. According to Robin Bernstein, writer with The Chronicle of Higher Education, it is less stressful than you might think. Preparing a conference poster is like preparing an elevator talk or business card about your research project. Good posters are not easy to make. Sure, there are hundreds of templates swerving around online, but what if you want to apply for one of our poster presentation awards? We have you covered!
